I created this image 20 years ago. It was one of my early photography successes. On this trip to San Diego, I tried out a couple of new things photography wise, including slide film. My images from that trip turned out great which was probably at least partially beginners luck. Creating some images I was really happy with was a gateway drug and 20 years later I’m still photographing.

La Jolla is my favorite urban sea scape. It’s just gorgeous. There are places that are more famous, like the French Rivera, but in my book, La Jolla beats them all.

We’re are coming up on almost 2 weeks since the shelter in place order was issued in the Bay Area and I’m really missing being able to go out and create new photographs or simply go out to dinner. So, I’m instead going to through old images that I never got around to publishing. This image is from Half Moon Bay in January.

One of my New Year’s Resolutions for 2020 is to do more local photography. I had planned on making the trek down to Pfeiffer Beach in Big Sur but the weather down there was poor. So I replanned and made the much shorter drive to Half Moon Bay.

One of the challenges with intended to do more photography is that it can be hard to plan in advance. The weather can render a planned excursion useless. I was able to find a suitable alternate location today so I’m keeping my resolution so far. However, February kills off most New Year’s resolutions so I’ll need to keep at it.

Happy 100th Birthday National Parks!

The National Parks Service turns 100 years old today. National Parks are one of America’s great ideas. Preserving our natural treasures in perpetuity as publicly owned parks was a brilliant and revolutionary idea in the late 1800s and it changed the world. Countries all the world have adopted the concept and in doing so have created an amazing legacy for future generations.

I treasure the time I’ve been fortunate enough to spend in our National Parks. A huge thank you to all the members of the National Park Service. They take care of our parks. It’s a vocation that people choose because of their love and reverence for the parks and we all owe you a debt gratitude for your hard work and dedication to our parks.

Grey Whale Cove State Beach

Grey Whale Cove State Beach is located a few miles south of Pacifica, just beyond Devil’s Slide. I’d driven this section of Highway 1 many times but never noticed the beach. There’s a well-marked parking lot right off the highway but one can not see the beach from the road. There’s a trail and stairs that lead down to beach. Getting down is pretty easy but the stairs and be bit taxing on the way back up.
