{"id":1763,"date":"2014-05-06T09:00:16","date_gmt":"2014-05-06T16:00:16","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.chowla.com\/photo_blog\/?p=1763"},"modified":"2014-05-04T22:41:11","modified_gmt":"2014-05-05T05:41:11","slug":"demolition-of-the-blue-cube","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.chowla.com\/photo_blog\/2014\/05\/demolition-of-the-blue-cube\/","title":{"rendered":"Demolition of the Blue Cube"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.chowla.com\/img\/web\/2\/blue-cube-demolition-8879-w840.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone\" alt=\"Demolition of the Blue Cube\" src=\"http:\/\/www.chowla.com\/img\/web\/2\/blue-cube-demolition-8879-w840.jpg\" width=\"840\" height=\"561\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Growing up in Silicon Valley, the Blue Cube which was officially known as Onizuka\u00a0Air Force Base loomed large in my imagination. \u00a0With my parents telling me the building had no windows to prevent spies but finding what was going on inside, \u00a0the Blue Cube conjured up visions of spies, espionage and James Bond-esque plots. \u00a0With those childhood memories in mind, the demolition of the Blue Cube feels like the end of era and in many ways it is. \u00a0There&#8217;s very little defense work that goes on in Silicon Valley today. \u00a0And, no 10 year old kid is going to drive past a Facebook building and wonder what secret work is going on inside.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/journaltimes.com\/news\/air-force-allows-a-peep-into-blue-cube\/article_97cc5878-1dfb-5e9d-92b1-9682725cf859.html\">The Air Force claims that the lack of windows was to save on heating and cooling costs<\/a> but I don&#8217;t believe them. \u00a0 Rationally, it seems unlikely because every other building has windows. \u00a0More importantly, it take ways all the mystery of place. \u00a0Even at its closing, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.mercurynews.com\/news\/ci_15624641\">most of what went on there is still classified<\/a>\u00a0so the mystery will live on, at least in minds of those of us who remember the Blue Cube.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp; Growing up in Silicon Valley, the Blue Cube which was officially known as Onizuka\u00a0Air Force Base loomed large in my imagination. \u00a0With my parents telling me the building had no windows to prevent spies but finding what was going on inside, \u00a0the Blue Cube conjured up visions of spies, espionage and James Bond-esque plots.
