Idaho 2026:

Mackay & Custer, Idaho

These are two towns we explored as part of our Sawtooth trip.

Mackay, Idaho, is a small town with some cool old buildings that we drove through on the way to Stanley. It was not a major stop, but it had enough character to be worth a look.

Custer, Idaho, is a “ghost town” not far from the Sawtooths. I put ghost town in quotes because it is beautifully maintained. It feels more like a living museum than an abandoned town. Custer was an old mining town, and the upkeep appears to be largely a volunteer effort by the Friends of Custer Museum. They do an incredible job. The town is well worth visiting if you are already in the area.
