The Living Desert, a zoo and botanical garden in Palm Springs, decorates with Christmas lights

November mornings in the desert are really cold but the joshua trees are beautiful at sunrise.

This scene caught my eye while on the pier at Fort Baker. The light shimmering across the water instantly reminded of the end of the Great Gatsby:
And as I sat there brooding on the old, unknown world, I thought of Gatsby’s wonder when he first picked out the green light at the end of Daisy’s dock. He had come a long way to this blue lawn, and his dream must have seemed so close that he could hardly fail to grasp it. He did not know that it was already behind him, somewhere back in that vast obscurity beyond the city, where the dark fields of the republic rolled on under the night.
Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that’s no matter – tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms further… And one fine morning –
So we beat on, boats against the current, borne back ceaselessly into the past.

I’m been to this spot many time taking pictures and am usually so fascinated by the trees right where I’m standing that I don’t look look around for alternative views. I’m pleased to have to noticed this one on my recent visit.

I always wonder if returning to the same the photo spot stunts or expands my creativity. Sometimes I think I’m just trying to repeat my past success. On the other hand, Monet painted the same garden over and over capturing it’s nuances in many different lights.
This is my favorite sunset spot near home. It’s in Half Moon Bay, less than 45 minutes from my home so easy to get to. I was here in 2008 and all the way back in 2001. My open question is am I getting better over time?

Once per year, the original fresnel lens is lit at Pigeon Point lighthouse. This is my favorite shot from this years event. Taken as the light is getting set up, the sky still had beautiful sunset colors.

Once per year, the original fresnel lens is lit at Pigeon Point lighthouse. The lens sends out multiple beams of light which slowly but continuously rotate. On the long exposures needed for the night time photography, the beams all blur together.
