Amman and Jerash

Amman, the capital city, is more modern and well organized than Cairo. Nearby are the impressive Roman ruins in Jerash. Jerash is very well preserved and quite an extensive site. Unlike Rome, where the modern is mixed in with ancient, ancient Jerash is carved out from the modern. It's in a charming state of decay and walking through the ruins with the hillsides covered in flowers, I could feel how old ruins would inspire the Picturesque movement.
